When I was in school, I looked forward to holiday celebrations as an opportunity to eat cookies and take a break from the monotony of class work. However, as a homeschooler, I realize now that I can homeschool holiday to enhance our study of history.

At home, we use the holiday to read fiction and nonfiction books, watch holiday specials and documentaries, and work fun projects. Here are some suggestions for holiday activities and other ideas for homeschooling holiday

New Year’s Day, January 1 – re-evaluate the past year and set goals for the new year. Make your party and throw Eve New Year’s party. Learn the art, Party Planning, time and calendars. Also learn other New Year celebrations around the world

Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, third Monday in January -. Commemorates the birth of Martin Luther King Jr. Read and read speeches MLK or watch them today. Investigate the history of violent protests and the civil rights movement is

Mother’s Day, Sunday, 2 May -. Honor the women in your family. Research queens, famous women throughout history, and suffrage women’s movement

Memorial Day, Last Monday in May -. This day honors those who died in the war. Learn Civil War and Decoration day. Learn about other days remembering the dead, so that festival lanterns in Japan and Dia de la muerte in Mexico

Father’s Day, Sunday 3 June -. Stand with the people in your family. Learn about kings, famous heroes and founders of our country

Independence Day, July 4 -. Memorial Church signing of the declaration of independence. Learn the American Revolution and the US flag. Singing patriotic poems and learn about our national symbols

Labor Day, the first Monday in September -. This day honors working people. For more information about the Industrial Revolution, workplace safety, child labor laws and trade unions

Day grandfather, the first Sunday after Labor Day -. Make cards or gifts for grandparents. Study family history

Columbus Day, October 12 -. Memorial day Christopher Columbus reached America. Learn about the famous explorers, sea and sea travel

Halloween October 31 -. Make your own costumes, and learn sewing and drama. This is also a great time to learn about nocturnal animals
